Question:
Science Jobs in Switzerland
Does anyone have any experience working in Switzerland? I am based in
Scotland and have just finished a PhD in biochemistry. There is a job for a
young PhD biochemist in Geneva which I am considering. I know the country is
absolutely beautiful, but I am worried about the expense of living there, it
is meant to be one of the most expensive countries in the world.
Does anyone have any pointers as to the cost of living, e.g average salaray
for a junior PhD scientist (in Swiss francs), average rent for a one room
apartment, car insurance etc...
Answer:
Art, I would not say that. There is clearly demand for scientific
personnel in Switzerland, so that the jobs go to the EU citizens.
Addressing the s.r.c. audience: have you noticed that the whiners on
s.r.c. are from the US, Canada, Australia (and a bit from UK) only ?
And none from Western and Northern Europe ? Maybe the economic
policies in the latter countries are intrinsically better in that they
are not as socially harsh for PhDs ?
That's it ! I am turning around and going to pack my luggage. I too
want to be a part of the socially friendly process.
Also: several days ago I posted a question to the s.r.c. about how to
make a transition for PhD holder into the occupation of ISO9000/9002
certification. I got none replies. Isn't it a sign of lack of concern
of s.r.c contributors for alternative careers ?
Lastly, the advice for James: go to the front webpage of a Swiss uni
in the city of your choice -- there should be a link(s) there to the
city's/about the city's website.
