Question:
My degree is in the Information Technology field and I believe I will
get a job offer from my school's IT department. I have spent most of
my life in school. I have worked as student assistant in the school's
computer lab, but only in that capacity only. Well, I'm kinda
nervous. I'll be actually doing things that will receive either
praise or criticism from my supervisor. Believe me, I think this is
the greatest job for me, because it will give me some experience and
something that will fill up my resume. However, I'm kind of nervous.
This is not an intern position, where there is not a whole lot of
responsibility for the intern. This is an actual full time position,
a professional job, where responsibility rests on my shoulder. One
mishap, and I'll probably be demoted, or worse fired. Those thoughts
do not sit well with me. I'm comfortable with my skills, but I know
I'm not a pro at those skills.
Anyways, I want to know what experiences you have had with a
professional job, your first time on the job and your feelings about
your capabilities and skills that you so proudly boasted about on your
resume. Did you think it was difficult transitioning from classroom
based work to a professional setting? Etc.?
Answer:
-I was worried about this when I entered the workforce from college, too. I have
found that people were generally very helpful and understanding when I started
my career. There is no way you could be expected to know everything about this
job when you start out. If you are unsure of something, ask for help so you can
be sure you are doing it right. Also, I don't know of a lot of jobs where you
could be demoted or fired after just one mishap.
- Answer: You won't be expected to be a seasoned pro just starting off. People will
give you a lot of leeway for making mistakes. Most likely, you won't be
given more responsibility than your supervisor thinks you can handle, even
if it is a professional job. What kind of mishaps would get you demoted or
fired? Is the IT department also responsible for running a nuclear reactor,
or local air traffic control? You'll find it's almost impossible to get
fired, that b.s. goes a long, long way in the IT field, but that a
concientious professional attitude will take you far.

Answer: That's too far back for me to remember, but I will say that probably you'll
find the professional setting to be very laid back compared to the
classroom, and you'll really enjoy being able to put some of what you
learned to good use.
