Can an employer fire a part time worker for working part time at a rival company

Question:
Can an employer fire a part time worker for working part time at a rival company. For example in my case I work at a non-profit computer repair store and I also want to work at best buy. Can the non-profit place fire me for getting a job at a rival company?

Answer:
-There are many details here left out which may bear on this case. However, I can easily believe that there are many conditions where your employer could dismiss you for working for a competitor. I am somewhat hard pressed to think of anything which would prevent such a dismissal

-In most states, an employer "can" fire you for any number of reasons, so the short answer to your question is yes, they can. Why don't you talk it over with them and see if you can reach some sort of accomodation? Most reasonable employers don't really care what their employees do during their off hours. In fact I would guess that Best Buy, not your independent shop, would be the ones that would give you trouble over this.

What is Your answer?
