Question:
A staggering 79,000 jobs disappeared from New York City in October,
government officials announced yesterday, signaling that all the dire
forecasts of economic fallout from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks may
have been understated.
Answer:
-This is truly a shocking number of job losses. Unfortunately, here in the Bay
Area there is quite a bit of job loss as well, although for a different reason.
Mainly, it indicates that much of the rest of the country can't pick up the
slack with people moving to where there are jobs. I do hope people can get the
help they need for the winter in NYC
-I agree but although I am very sorry for these job losses we must remember that
a business must close in order to benefit from bankruptcy. It's like the old
joke:
There was these two guys laying out sunning at a West Palm Beach Florida
retirement community who got to talking.
"Hi, I'm Solomon, but my friends call me Sol for short. I'm from New York".
"I'm Rueben, friends call me Rube for short. I'm from St Louis".
"Well Sol, you seem awful young to be retired".
"I am Rube. My wife and I had a furniture business in New York. We had a bad
fire that destroyed our store. When we settled with the insurance company, we
decided to come on South".
"What a small world Sol, my wife and I had a furniture store in Missouri. We
had a tornado come through and destroyed our business. We decided to take the
insurance money and retire rather than try to build it back up".
A long silence.
"Er, tell me Rube, how do you start a tornado " ?
