Question:
I'm a male RN who has been supporting my wife while she finished
graduate school. She's gotten a good job offer in northern California
and we plan to move there from Minneapolis. Since she'll have a job I
have the freedom to seek the kind of work I'd like. Most important is
spending time with my 2-year-old son. Is it possible to get this kind
of job?
1. in a nursing home, not a hospital
2. be a permanent employee with the normal 40 hours/week benefits
3. but work 2 12-hour shifts on the weekend. one on sunday and one on
saturday
4. work 4 hrs on wednesday
What I'm asking is whether nursing homes there give 36 hours credit
for working 24 over the weekend like some here do. And then the 4 on
wednesday would make a standard 40-hour week?
Is this done in northern California?
Answer:
If there is a number of homes in the new locale, you may have the luxury
of bargaining. Keep the extra four hours as "an extra". Send a couple
of resumes with the hours you want and see what happens. Managers -
nursing or otherwise - are in a job market, just like you are. They will
pay the freight to get what they need. Experience in NH would be a plus,
and the "extra" four hours, if not useful in patient care, might be
valuable for chart reviews and such.
