Question:
I got a job offer today. I really didn't want to do
this job, but hey it is a job. I got a little excited because that meant I
wouldn't be evicted, and i can pay some other bills. I walked there and back
which was about 5 miles each way in the rain. I get home from the job
interview (they offered me the job at the interview) and I have a message on
my answering machine. I call them back and they tell me that they have to
rescind the job offer. They just found out they will be having to lay off a
lot of people on Monday. I am so frustrated and scared. I will probably be
evicted in 2 weeks. I can't pay any of my bills. My power will probably be
shut off next Wed. I don't know what to do.
Answer:
Alright, continue looking for something, anything. I also advise trying
with a temp. agency, but IME, that hasn't always come through for me. The
last time I was out of work, the temp agency didn't call me once. But, if
there's need, they can place you pretty quickly, usually for at least $7/hr,
and most give paychecks on the weekly basis.
Second...(maybe you've done this, maybe you haven't)...bite your pride &
seek help. Check local churches, local agencies (goodwill, helping hands,
"CARES", united way) and see what is available in the form of assistance.
I'm not sure what exactly you have around there. I worked for a mental
health agency...you could always call & ask a local one if they can refer
you to somebody who may be able to help you. You can also ask for referrals
from churches, missions, etc. Obviously, I'm not encouraging you to become
a "charity case," but you've hit almost rock bottom. It can get worse from
here, when you *don't* have a place to live. I've had a friend that's been
homeless & she said it's pure hell trying to find a job when you don't have
an address to put on the application.
Do you have anything to sell on ebay, or maybe a consignment store? yeah,
it sucks to get rid of what you do have, but sometimes it's necessary. Ask
my DH how much musical stuff he has sacrificed for rent in the past 5 yrs.
And we didn't get 1/2 of what it was worth..we just had to take what we
could get. To this day, I feel guilty about it, but I also know we'd have
been out of Nashville and living with one of our parents had we not sold it.
Have you tried fast food, Walmart, the local grocery store? I know, that
hurts too...but it sounds like you're willing to do whatever to get through
this phase.
And another thing...I don't recall your particular situation, but is Dave
making any money? I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but
JIK...prioritize your bills. You'd be surprised the number of people that
will pay for their student loan or credit card, and then not have the money
to pay for rent. As much as it bothered me to miss payments on those
things, the bottom line is, they can't take what you don't have. They can't
repossess your house, your car, etc, 'cuz you don't have it. Disclaimer:
