Question:
Due to a dire need to snap a couple of customers off at the
knees... and a feeling that I have gained corporate survival
skills... suitable for at least another 6 months to a year
rip, I put my resume on Monster.com and replied to a wide
range of offers in the 80k-100k range. 150 or more resume's
in total but they were to very specific openings (unless they
were recruiters just gathering resume;s which probably half or
more were).
My history shows a project consulting career..not what some
employers think indicates instability. 30 projects and as many
companies in the last 10 years. Ive never been a salaried
type of person. Mechanical/ Electrical engineering, industrial
project logistics, options and management.
any comments on viability with Monster or other issues in this
range?
Answer:
the engineering office jobs are off to india etc big time,
except for a few lifer positions at the top, principles etc.
the on site stuff that takes brains is still available in a
decent but not spectacular range 70 80 k for the most part..
not much after taxes...and lower than 5 years ago, and we have
deflated the dollar 30=40* in that time span... so its not
real attractive... top level positions are advertised at
110k... thats about what a union plumber earns.
the bottom though is hurting, some very high skilled technical
or trades positions are advertized 12 to 15 dollars an hour...
27 is a peak. You can buy bus fare on 15 dollars after
taxes and living expenses etc.
It will be interesting to see how it goess on an engineering
position.. so far two nibbles in a day and a half.
I do some landscape work now from time, is that retraiing?
I was at Golds gym today and two high roller realestate agents
were talking... million dollar house deals.. its all very
casual at 6%... some of those guys are getting rich... and
will slide on through ok after the bubble bursts. Im just
not the type though.
