Question:
I am looking for a new job. Hopefully, I can find a job I want to stay in for
the next 30 or so yrs. until I retire. I have had some really bad experiences
& I don't want to repeat them.
One place I worked in was like WWII. Constant bickering. I am afraid to ask
in a job interview how well people get along at the company because I am afraid
it will make me look bad.
Do they use the latest technology? I worked in one place for 4 yrs. When it
came time for me to find another job, I had a difficult time finding another
job because the technology we had been using was so out of date. I had become
obsolete.
Do they have any "secrets" they are hiding from me? I worked at one place that
had just been bought out by a huge corporation. The new owners treated
everyone badly, & people were quitting like flies. Our boss kept telling us
that the problems were "only temporary" but things got worse & worse. I
finally couldn't stand it any more & quit.
Do you have to work with anyone who is difficult? I had to sit in a cubical
next to a guy who smelled like he never bathed. GROSS!
How do you find out about a company before you accept a job? I am afraid it
will be difficult for me to find another job because I have had so many jobs.
I look like a job-hopper. I feel that I made a super-human effort to stay in
my past jobs, but the situations were so bad that NO ONE could have put up with
them.
Answer:
Have you considered consulting? That's a good way to build your skills and
check out the companies. Then again, you may discover that you like
consulting and decide to start your own company. Who knows?
