Question:
Out of curiosity, I started looking for IT manager jobs with colleges & universities
near home. I soon came to realize that checking the usual places for IT jobs didn't
turn up the few openings I found. Obviously academics advertise differently.
(TTU usually advertises in the local papers and on their web site only. Higher positions
are sometimes done through a placement agency.)
That leads me to two somewhat naïve questions (for one who has worked on a university
for seven years...)
- What good job hunting resources exist for IT managers in the academic world?
- Is there a single good resource for IT managers, directors, and CIO's?
Answer:
-Try The Chronicle of Higher Education. It's also one of the best
newspapers in the US, IMNSHO.
-In my year-long search to join my fiancée' in Las Vegas, I have relied
on www.higheredjobs.com to look for jobs at Nevada colleges. It, of course, has
jobs for many other colleges in other areas as well. I have applied for several
management-level positions at UNLV through the site.
I have not found a single resource for I.T. management openings. During my quest to
relocate, I have used the local papers, monster.com, hotjobs.com, websites of major
employers in the area (which led me to higheredjobs.com), and several industry-specific
employment sites and recruiting agencies.
Of course, the only time I made any headway was when I already knew someone at the
company or I had someone refer me....
-You could check out FindAJob.com ( http://www.findajob.com ) for
university IT jobs or academic jobs in general. They have 4 or 5 times
as many jobs as the Chronicle or Higher Ed Jobs.
