Question:
I just got back from a vacation in Hawaii, and I must say I was
absolutely blown away by the incredible beauty of the state. I'm from
the east coast but my brief stay in Hawaii has me dreaming of just
picking up my life and moving it to the islands.
My one concern is finding a job. I'm a computers consultant
experienced in a variety of information technologies.
It doesn't seem, from what I've seen on the Internet, that there's a
lot of work out there for an IT professional of my caliber.
Does anyone have experience with working in the Information Technology
field in Hawaii? If so, could you give me a clue as to what the job
market is like for IT professionals out there? Also, any Internet
resources you could point out ot me for finding IT jobs in Hawaii
would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
-Local companies don't pay good and it has only a hand full of real
high tech firms in Hawaii. Most of them are downsizing if not on the
way out. We still have some "mom and pop" ISPs around and some so-so
local IT solution providers.
The best bet for you is to work for the miliiary as a contractor. They
hire a lot of people and their pay are good especailly you have secret
clearence. You can start from their website like Locheed Martin.
-Besides the military, I've heard that one of the main IT places to work would
be the telescopes on the island of Hawaii. I think they're primarily UNIX.
-Several web sites to look at for information:
pacific.bcentral.com
www.hawaiibusiness.cc
www.hitechhawaii.com
www.thinktechhawaii.com
www.hawaiiventures.com
www.elisthawaii.com
www.tigrnet.org
There are several bigger tech companies out here. The focus is on
engineering on biotech.

www.oceanit.com
What a lot more people are doing now that the job market is stale is
that they are moving to Hawaii and starting their own businesses.=20
There are some military contracts to be won.
