Question:
I jumped out of civil engineering a few years ago and am wondering what the
market is like these days:
What is the average salary for a civil engineer with about 5 years of
experience?
For those of you with around 5 years of experience, how much of a salary
increase do you anticipate within the next 5 years?
What salary survery web sites are out there that you feel are realistic?
Answer:
-I am an executive recruiter, specializing in placing Civil Engineers in the
Metro DC area, including Maryland and Virginia. In this are of the country,
there is a critical shortage of CEs, especially with around 5 years+
experience. Questions I would need to know from you would be regarding your
work history as outlined in a resume, do you have a PE or are you working
towards it? What kind of projects have you worked on in the past. What
kind of work do you enjoy doing. Will you work for a branch office of a
large ENR 100 company? Smaller company? What are your specialty areas in
engineering, as in water resources for example. For the right candidate
with 5 years experience, I can arrange 6 - 8 interviews over a 2-3 day
period, all with good companies and all of them will make you an offer. You
then work with us to decide which ones you want and what you will accept. A
civil with 5 years and a PE is going to be in the mid to upper 60's range,
if he has true project management experience this number goes higher. On
any given day, I am still amazed at what my clients will pay when they want
someone.
I welcome anyone from this area or anyone considering re-locating to call me
and discuss your career opportunities at any time
