California Driving License and SSN Exempt?

Question:
well I am still waiting for my SSN and did a quick search here about getting the driving test here in CA and having an SSN. The DMV site states that I need a SSN OR be exempt from needing one. I read in my search here on the forum that a poster went to SS office and got a letter to state they were exempt from needing a SSN for their driving license. SO does anyone know anything about this? Also if I have to wait to get the SSN, will the paper receipt be accepted OR do they stick strictly to requiring the actual card? Here is the link to the thread where someone got a letter from SS Office to state they were exempt. It refers to the poster having a H4, is that the only way I could get SS office to give me a letter stating I would be exempt? http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249571&highl- ight=california+driving+test

Answer:
-Why don't you go to your local driving license office and ask?, does your receipt have an assigned number already?, I was given a receipt when I applied but It didn't have a number, I have had my Colorado driving license for 3 years now (1 as a minor..), on may 2005 it will be 4 years !!

-I'm not sure, of course, since I don't live in CA. But, I would think if they are requiring a SSN as proof of something, then the letter might not work because it won't have the SSN on it. Only the fact that you have an application pending. Maybe you could call DMV on that one and ask?
