Question:
Ok – so you build a website and you hope for the traffic. Then you try
to decide on how to get the site to all the search engines. But which
search engines? Plus you need to choose your keywords. The first
question is – how do any of the engines actually rank you? It seems
the Internet is saturated with websites of almost anything &
everything. Plus is one better off to spend $1000's on someone who
claims they can get your website ranked or does one just head over to
some shareware site and purchase some type of web submitting software?
The mystery to get your site on a search engine seems as simple as
waiting for a BOT to hit your site, but "unique" words?
Any ideas? As the bottom line is – I have some sites that need to be
added to search engines + they need some traffic. So instead of
pushing spam, posting on message boards, running link farms – is there
software that will work – or does a SEO need to be in place. Plus what
is a SEO – I know what it stands for, but how different is that from
just having this software that ranges from $20 to $800.
Answer:
The best marketing tool you could possibly have at your disposal is a
great site that is so useful that people will tell their friends. I
think you need to work on that. Then find a way to tell your friends,
colleagues, people in the target audience, etc. Too much emphasis on
search engines will get you nowhere.
My site is number 6 on Google for my most common search terms. I get
more traffic from word of mouth than from search engines. And I am going
to conventions over the next couple of months to promote the site. SEO
has its place, but it is only one tool in a broader marketing plan
