Question:
I will be graduating this fall with a B.S. in biology, and I was
considering taking a job monitoring compliance with fishing
regulations on fishing vessels in the Bering sea area.
This job would entail staying on a fishing industry ship while
observing their practices. Has anyone had experience or knowledge of
this sort of position?
Thanks for any advice or other suggestions...
Answer:
-it depends entirely on the vessel you are on and who's running the
show. crews work long hours, and you will too. you probably should
take a look at the cautions for fishery workers on the alaska dept of
labor web page
http://www.state.ak.us/local/akpages/LABOR/esd_alaska_jobs/seaharv.htm
hope you like rough weather, because you'll sure find it in the bering
sea.
-, I am a college student whose desperately looking for money to support
my education. I read about the fisheries on alaska and it seems to offer
pretty good income(more than$300 a month? not sure exactly). I have heard
many warnings about the hardship for people work there and frankly I am a
little scared. But to support my education I must take some risk. So,
please, if anyone knows more about the fisheries, maybe like which company
is the best? How's life there? Do I really earn that much?
